Conference focuses on reducing health disparities (Philadelphia Tribune)

The impact of social determinants on health care was highlighted during the 11th Annual National Conference on Health Disparities.

The four-day conference brought elected officials and professionals together to have a dialogue about how to reduce health disparities — the differences in health status and outcomes based on race and economic standing.

he conference’s keynote and luncheon speakers include U.S. Rep. James E. Clyburn (D-S.C.), Baltimore City Health Commissioner Dr. Leana S. Wen, President and CEO of Independence Blue Cross Dan Hilferty and President and CEO of Jefferson Health Dr. Steve Klasko.

When I’ve asked experts about these approaches, it’s not that any of them are bad. It’s that they fall short. For instance, Leana Wen, the former health commissioner of Baltimore (and soon-to-be president of Planned Parenthood), said that the Support for Patients and Communities Act “is simply tinkering around the edges.”
