Dr. Wen Urges Millennials to “Re-write the Rules” of Public Participation at Roosevelt Institute Discussion

On Tuesday, Dr. Leana Wen joined Congressman Xavier Becerra and Maryland Delegate Ana Sol Gutierrez for “Who Writes the Rules? Millennials Rising in 2016,” a discussion hosted by the Roosevelt Institute on how young people can empower their communities through public participation. During the event in Philadelphia this week, Dr. Wen called on the audience comprised of aspiring young leaders to find a way to get involved, rather than waiting for what they may perceive to be the “perfect opportunity.”

Nutrition is closely related to health for all ages. A recent event at the Waxter Senior Center highlighted nutrition issues specific to older Baltimoreans.

Last Thursday, hundreds of seniors filled the first floor of the Waxter Center for the first-ever B’More Healthy Senior Nutrition Expo. During the event’s kickoff, Deputy Commissioner of Aging and CARE Services Heang Tan reminded visitors that it’s “important to eat healthy at any age.” Over forty vendors and farmers offered services from health screenings to meal demonstrations.

Dr. Wen Highlights the Status of Opioid Prevention at the Criminal Justice Coordinating Council

On Wednesday, Dr. Wen spoke before the Criminal Justice Coordinating Council (CJCC), a forum comprised of representatives across Baltimore City’s criminal justice system, to discuss the city’s response to the opioid epidemic. The CJCC convenes key stakeholders, including judges, attorneys, public defenders, sheriffs, police administration, and state and local government officials to address public safety and related issues that are critical to supporting and improving communities.  

B’More Health Talks Gathers Experts to Discuss Zika

Today, B’More Health Talks aired another podcast on the topic of the Zika virus and its potential impact on Baltimore City. Dr. Wen joined experts in the fields of, environmental health, population health, pediatrics, obstetrics and ecosystem studies to address recent developments of the Zika virus and how experts are viewing its progression. Guests discussed the facts about Zika and suggested ways everyone can help to prevent its spread.

Federal Opioid Legislation Debated in Congress

Across the country, opioid-related deaths have skyrocketed, bringing this public health issue to the forefront of the nation’s conscience. This week, members of Congress convened to discuss the Comprehensive Addiction and Recovery Act of 2016 (CARA), a package of policies that aim to combat the national opioid epidemic.  Because the House and the Senate had previously passed different versions of legislation, the bill was sent to a conference committee comprised of both House and Senate members to resolve those differences in order to advance the proposed policy.

Gun violence is a public health epidemic that can be prevented. Federal, state and city leaders delivered that message during a press conference convened by Marylanders to Prevent Gun Violence on Wednesday. Baltimore City Health Commissioner Dr. Leana Wen joined U.S. Representatives Elijah Cummings, Dutch Ruppersburger, John Sarbanes, and Chris Van Hollen, along with Baltimore City Police Commissioner Davis and community advocates to discuss the historic Congressional sit-in and called for action to prevent future gun violence.

New Alliance of Women Experts Formed to Combat Stigma around Opioid Addiction Treatment Awards Dr. Wen for Efforts on Addiction and Prevention

On Thursday, scientific, health policy, and medical experts joined to celebrate the formation of Female Opioid-addiction Research and Clinical Experts (FORCE), a groundbreaking new alliance of women experts that aims to address the stigma surrounding opioid addiction treatment and encourage a shift in mentality to recognize that opioid addiction is not a moral failing, but a chronic mental condition.

On Thursday, Dr. Wen illuminated the ways in which health ties into all the other foundational aspects of stability at the United Way of Central Maryland (UWCM) 91st Annual Meeting. Dr. Wen joined the UWCM Board of Directors, President and CEO Mark Furst, members of the UWCM’s six Community Partnership Boards, community leaders, and family stability partner organizations to talk about “The Power of Partnerships.”
