Over Twenty Animals Perish in Local Fire

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

BALTIMORE, MD (July 29, 2015) – Last night, BCHD’s Office of Animal Control was called to Morrell Park to respond to the scene of a fire in which a number of animals were believed to have died.   Twelve Himalayan adult cats, 11 kittens and two dogs were confirmed dead on the scene.

Statement from Baltimore City Health Commissioner Dr. Leana Wen

“The Health Department is sad to report that 25 animals perished last night in a house fire.  We are investigating the reasons as to why so many animals were present.

Baltimore, like all major cities, is overwhelmed with the overpopulation of animals.  We encourage people looking to adopt a pet to visit BARCS, our city’s animal shelter.

Animals rely on the community to help protect them. Please report animal abuse by calling 911 for an incident in progress or 311 if you suspect someone is neglecting or abusing an animal, or if you suspect an illegal breeding operation.

With the news of this heartbreaking fire, we encourage all pet owners to make sure you have an escape plan for your pet in case of an emergency.  Local pet stores have stickers and signs you can put on your residence to notify the fire department of the presence of animals.’’
