Baltimore City Naloxone Standing Orders
Baltimore City Naloxone Standing Orders
Maryland Law SB 516: Public Health – Overdose Response Program expands access to the lifesaving drug, naloxone, or Narcan, a medication that reverses the effect of opioid overdose. As a result of this law, on October 1, 2015, former Baltimore City Health Commissioner Dr. Leana Wen issued a jurisdiction-wide standing order for naloxone to be dispensed by pharmacies and overdose response program employees or volunteers. Baltimore City’s standing order model will help to expand access to naloxone to those at risk of experiencing an opioid overdose in Baltimore City and make it easier for people to get naloxone from their local pharmacist when they need it.
On October 1, 2015, Baltimore City became the first jurisdiction in Maryland to expand access to naloxone using a standing order.
